Abu Husayn, from Ibn Sabit, from ‘Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, who said: “Mu‘adh ibn Jabal stood among us and said: ‘O Banu Awd! I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’” He then cited the hadith and said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic. Muslim ibn Khalid al-Zanji was the imam and mufti of the people of Mecca, although the two Shaykhs held that hadith was not his specialty.” Al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib: “A jurist, truthful, but prone to many errors.”
I say: However, he was not alone in narrating it. Al-Haythami cited it in al-Majma‘ (10/396) with similar wording, but without its final sentence, and said: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat with similar wording, adding: ‘in bodies that do not die.’ The chain of al-Kabir is good, except that Ibn Sabit did not meet Mu‘adh. I say: The narrator omitted between them is ‘Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, as al-Hakim narrated it...” He then mentioned al-Hakim’s preceding statement and endorsed it.
I say: The hadith has many corroborating reports in the two Sahih collections and elsewhere concerning the slaughter of death in the form of a ram. It includes: “Then the caller will proclaim: ‘O people of Paradise, everlastingness and no death; O people of Hell, everlastingness and no death.’” It is therefore authentic on account of these corroborating reports. And Allah knows best.
