Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

(p. 475), and al-Kalabadhi in The Key to Meanings (90/1–2), through routes from Ibrahim ibn Sa‘d, who said: “My father told me: ‘I was sitting beside Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman in the mosque when a handsome old man from Banu Ghifar passed by, with deafness—or, he said, impairment—in his ears. He sent for Humayd, and when he came, he said: “My nephew, make room for him between you and me, for he accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” So he came and sat between us. Humayd then asked him, “Is this the hadith that you related to me from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?” The old man replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say...”’” He then narrated it.

I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and were used by both al-Bukhari and Muslim; moreover, the unknown identity of a Companion does not detract from it.

Some weak narrators identified him as Abu Hurayrah. Al-‘Uqayli and al-Ramahurmuzi, in Proverbs, transmitted it through ‘Amr ibn al-Husayn, who said: Umayyah ibn Sa‘d al-Umawi narrated to us: Safwan ibn Sulaym narrated to us, from Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf, from Abu Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet, with the addition: “His laughter is the lightning, and His speech is the thunder.” Al-‘Uqayli cited it in the biographical notice on this Umayyah and said of him: “He is unknown; there is an error in his hadith, and perhaps the defect came from ‘Amr ibn al-Husayn.”

I say: It is more appropriate to declare it defective on his account, for he is a liar. Thus, reliance is upon the first route.

1666 — “Indeed, Allah enjoins you to treat your mothers well; then He enjoins you to treat your fathers well; then your nearest relatives, and then those next nearest.”

Recorded by al-Bukhari in Good Manners in Isolation (60), Ibn Majah (3661), al-Hakim (4/151), and Ahmad (4/131 and 132), through Baqiyyah and Isma‘il ibn ‘Ayyash, from Buhayr ibn Sa‘id, from Khalid ibn Ma‘dan, from al-Miqdam ibn Ma‘di Karib al-Kindi, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Hakim said:
