I say: Talhah is abandoned.
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, Sufyan ibn Wakiʿ narrated to us: Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us from Musa ibn ʿUbaydah, from Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn Kariz, from him, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording. Ibn ʿAdi recorded it (183/2) and deemed it defective, since someone other than Sufyan narrated it as a mursal report, without mentioning Ibn ʿUmar.
I say: He is weak and was susceptible to prompting, and Musa is weak as well. In sum, the hadith cited in the heading is authentic beyond doubt, unlike the addition. And Allah knows best.
- “Indeed, Allah brings people out of the Fire after nothing remains of them therein except their faces, and Allah admits them into Paradise.”
ʿAbd ibn Humayd recorded it in Selections from the Musnad (100/1) through the route of ʿAtiyyah, from Abu Saʿid, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. ʿAtiyyah—namely al-ʿAwfi—is weak and practised tadlīs. However, the hadith is found in Sahih al-Bukhari (4/463–464) through another route from Abu Saʿid, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He mentioned the lengthy hadith of intercession, which includes: “Allah Most High will say: ‘Go, and bring out whomever you find with the weight of a dinar of faith in his heart.’ And Allah will forbid their forms to the Fire …” Here, “forms” means faces. Thus, it is a strong corroborating report for this hadith, which is why I have included it here in al-Sahihah.
- “Allah says: ‘A servant whose body I have kept sound and whose livelihood I have made ample, yet five years pass without his coming to Me in pilgrimage, is indeed deprived.’”
