“A singular hadith through this route, narrated from Anas from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is good, and its narrators are reliable. The incident related in it is found in Muslim and elsewhere in the previously mentioned hadith of Abu Masʿud, so it constitutes a strong corroborating report. Ziyad ibn Maymun al-Thaqafi also corroborated him regarding the hadith cited in the heading, narrating it from Anas and attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the addition: “By Allah, Allah loves the succouring of the distressed.” It was recorded by Abu Yaʿla in his Musnad (3/1063), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in The Fulfilling of Needs (p. 78), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in The Compendium, without this addition.
I say: This Ziyad is abandoned, and Yazid ibn Harun declared him a liar. Al-Bazzar also recorded it in his Musnad (no. 1951), but it appears there as: Ziyad al-Numayri. Al-Mundhiri likewise said (1/72), after attributing it to him: “It contains Ziyad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Numayri, who has been declared reliable, and it has corroborating reports.” That is what he said, although al-Numayri is in a better state than al-Thaqafi; and Allah knows best.
This addition has also been narrated through the route of Abu al-ʿAbbas Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Sami: Azhar ibn Saʿd narrated to us from Ibn ʿAwn, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn ʿAsakir recorded it in The History of Damascus (15/72/2).
I say: This al-Sami is al-Kudaymi, who is accused of fabricating hadith.
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbas, Talhah ibn ʿAmr narrated it from ʿAtaʾ, from him, attributing it to the Prophet, and adding: “By Allah, Allah loves the succouring of the distressed.” Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri recorded it in The Forty Hadith (157/2), and al-Bayhaqi in The Branches of Faith (2/449/2).
