1645 — “Whoever’s life is concluded by feeding a needy person, seeking Allah’s reward, will enter Paradise. Whoever’s life is concluded by fasting a day, seeking Allah’s reward, will enter Paradise. Whoever’s life is concluded by saying, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking Allah’s reward, will enter Paradise.”
Ibn Shāhīn narrated it in the fifth part of al-Afrād; al-Mukhalliṣ in al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh (23 / 2); and Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Iṣfahān (1 / 218–219), through Hishām ibn al-Qāsim, the brother of Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, who said: I heard Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind narrate from Ḥudhayfah, who said:
“I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during his final illness. I saw that he was about to sit up, while ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, was beside him, nodding from drowsiness. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I can only assume that ʿAlī has stayed awake with you throughout this night. Shall I not come nearer to you?’ He said, ‘ʿAlī has more right to do so than you.’ So ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, came near and supported him, and I heard him say”—then he cited it.
Ibn Shāhīn said: “This is a singular hadith, and I know of no hadith from Hishām ibn al-Qāsim other than this.”
I say: He is counted among the unknown narrators, for they did not mention him—except for Ibn Ḥibbān, who included him in al-Thiqāt (2 / 294 of the Ẓāhiriyyah manuscript) and cited this hadith for him, without adding anything further.
I have found a corroborating route for it. Ibn Bishrān narrated it in al-Amālī (134 / 1), through al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar, from Muḥammad ibn Juḥādah, from Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind, from him, in abbreviated form. Its wording is:
“I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day he passed away, and he said to me: ‘O Ḥudhayfah, whoever is written’—thus it appears, though it is perhaps: ‘whose life is concluded’—‘at death with the testimony that there is no god but Allah, sincerely, will enter Paradise.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, should I keep this secret or proclaim it?’ He said, ‘Rather, proclaim it.’” He said: “For this was the last thing I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
