It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/438), al-Ḥākim (4/382–383), and al-Bayhaqī (8/331), through Yaḥyā al-Jābir, who said: I heard Abū Mājidah say: “I was sitting with ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, and he said: ‘I can still recall the first man whose hand the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered amputated. A thief was brought before him, and he ordered that his hand be cut off. The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seemed to grow sorrowful, so they said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is as though you disliked that his hand be cut off.” He said: “What should prevent me? Do not be ...”’ and so forth.”
Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī remained silent about it, though that was not appropriate of him, since he mentioned this Abū Mājidah in al-Mīzān and said: “He is unknown. Al-Nasāʾī said: ‘His hadith is rejected,’ and al-Bukhārī said: ‘He is weak.’”
Yet, in my view, the hadith is good, since most of it has been established separately in other hadiths. As for his saying, “Do not be Satan’s helpers against your brother,” al-Bukhārī recorded it from Abū Hurayrah. See al-Mishkāt (2621). His saying, “Indeed, it is not fitting ...,” is supported by the hadith of Ibn ʿAmr: “Pardon the prescribed penalties among yourselves ...,” which is referenced in al-Mishkāt (3568). As for the hadith concerning pardon, it is supported by the hadith of ʿĀʾishah: “Say: O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love pardon ...” It is in al-Mishkāt (2091). Al-Suyūṭī also mentioned another supporting report for it, narrated by Ibn ʿAdī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar.
1639 — “Allah, Exalted is He, said: ‘We sent down wealth for the establishment of prayer and the giving of zakah. If the son of Adam had one valley, he would wish to have a second beside it; and if he had two valleys, he would wish to have a third beside them. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust. Then Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.’”
