Al-Bukhārī cited him in the biographical entry on this ʿAṭiyyah, but mentioned neither narrator criticism nor accreditation for him. Ibn Abī Ḥātim did likewise (3/1/382), stating that three trustworthy narrators transmitted from him. He is also included in Ibn Ḥibbān’s Trustworthy Narrators (3/204).
The second sentence of it is also found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere, in the hadith of Abū Hurayrah. Al-Ḥākim recorded it (2/604) through Ibn ʿAjlān, from his father, from him, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “I am Abū al-Qāsim; Allah gives, and I distribute.” He said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
However, it is only good, because Muslim did not rely upon Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān as an independent authority; rather, he narrated from him only as corroboration or alongside another narrator. Yet it is authentic in view of the preceding routes of transmission.
1629 — “When Allah created creation, He wrote with His Hand concerning Himself: ‘Indeed, My mercy overcomes My wrath.’”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (2/271)—this being his wording—as did Aḥmad (2/433) and Ibn Mājah (4295), through Ibn ʿAjlān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah, who said it. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a good, authentic, singular hadith.”
I say: Its chain is good, and the hadith is authentic, for it has many other routes in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and in the Musnad (2/242, 257, 259, 313, 358, 381, 397, and 466), from Abū Hurayrah, with similar wording. See some of them in The Shades of Paradise: A Verification of the Sunnah (808–809).
