that he died in 284 AH, but did not mention any narrator criticism or accreditation concerning him. Yet he was corroborated by Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Junayd al-Khuttalī and Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Ḍarīr, who said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūnus informed us of it. Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (2/226/1) from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Sahl al-Sāmirī, from the two of them. This Abū Bakr is al-Kharāʾiṭī, the author of Noble Character and Its Lofty Qualities, who also recorded it therein (pp. 2–3) through this chain of transmission. Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it in The Names (p. 53) through another route from Ibn Yūnus, with the same report.
I say: It is therefore an authentic chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy and have biographical entries in al-Tahdhīb, apart from al-Kharāʾiṭī’s two shaykhs, who are likewise trustworthy. Al-Kharāʾiṭī also recorded it (p. 55) through Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, from al-Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāh, from Sulaymān ibn Suḥaym, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said—and he then mentioned it, adding at its beginning: “Indeed, Allah is Generous; He loves generosity and loves lofty …”
Al-Haytham ibn Kulayb also recorded it in al-Musnad (7/1) through this route, as did Abū ʿUbaydah in The Virtues of the Quran (folio 11/2). This is a weak mursal report. This ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz was a trustworthy Successor. Al-Haytham’s version did not identify him as being related to Kurayz, so he assumed that he was the Companion Ṭalḥah ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Taymī and included him in his Musnad! Al-Suyūṭī likewise did so in al-Jāmiʿ, failing to note that it was mursal, contrary to his usual practice in similar cases.
