1622 — “When Allah unleashes His might against those upon whom He has decreed retribution, and righteous people are among them, they too are afflicted along with them; then they will be resurrected according to their intentions.”
Ibn Hibban narrated it (1846) from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman al-Raqqi, who said: Zuhayr ibn Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Aishah, who said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when Allah unleashes His might upon the people of the earth, among whom are righteous people, will they perish along with them?’” He then cited the hadith.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission because of this al-Raqqi, for he is weak, as al-Hafiz stated. Al-Dhahabi listed him in al-Du‘afa’ and said: “Al-Nasa’i and others said: ‘Abandoned.’”
I say: However, the hadith is found in Sahih Muslim (8/168) and al-Musnad (6/259), through other routes from ‘Aishah, with a different wording. Muslim’s wording is: “How astonishing! Some people from my Ummah will make for the Sacred House in pursuit of a man from Quraysh who has taken refuge in the Sacred House. When they reach al-Bayda’, they will be swallowed up by the earth.” We said: “O Messenger of Allah, the road may bring different people together.” He said: “Yes. Among them will be one who joins knowingly, one who is compelled to join, and a wayfarer. They will perish in a single destruction, yet will be sent forth to different destinies; Allah will resurrect them according to their intentions.”
Al-Bukhari (4/271) and Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (5/11) also narrated it through another route from ‘Aishah, attributed to the Prophet, with a similar wording: “An army will invade the Ka‘bah, and when they reach a desert plain ...”—the hadith.
The hadith also has a supporting report from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “When Allah intends to punish a people, the punishment afflicts all who are among them; then they will be resurrected according to their deeds.”
