Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

“(3/94): ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma‘mar narrated to us, from Isma‘il ibn Umayyah, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, observed i‘tikaf in the mosque. He heard them reciting aloud while he was in a small tent of his, so he drew aside the curtains and said: “Indeed, each of you is conversing privately with his Lord. So do not harm one another, and do not raise your voices over one another in recitation”—or, he said, “in prayer.”’”

Abu Dawud likewise recorded it (1/209—Taziyyah): al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us through the same chain. This is an authentic chain according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.

I say: Thus, he attributed it to Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, rather than to Abu Hurayrah and Aisha, and that is correct.

The hadith also has a corroborating report from al-Bayadi: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came out to the people while they were praying and their voices had risen in recitation. He said: ‘Indeed, the one praying is conversing privately with his Lord, so let him consider what he is conversing with Him about, and do not recite the Quran aloud over one another.’” It has been narrated from him through four different routes, as explained previously under no. 1597.

Al-Suyuti attributed the hadith cited in the heading to al-Hakim, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, with the wording: “When one of you stands to pray, he is only conversing privately with his Lord, so let him consider how he is conversing with Him.” But I have not found it in al-Hakim’s Mustadrak. Al-Manawi attributed it to Ahmad, al-Nasa’i, and al-Bayhaqi, but I have not found it in their works on the authority of Abu Hurayrah. Rather, I found it in their works—except for al-Nasa’i—in the previously cited report of Abu Sa‘id and in the aforementioned report of al-Bayadi in Ahmad. Both have appeared shortly before under no. 1597.

Then I came upon the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in the Mustadrak by means of the index I compiled for it.
