A hadith with similar wording is authentically reported from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, as a report attributed to the Prophet, and it has been documented in Takhrīj al-Ḥalāl wa-l-Ḥarām (“Documentation of the Lawful and the Forbidden”) (405). The hadith has many corroborating reports, one of which will come under no. 2474.
The term shajnah—also pronounced shijnah or shujnah—means “a branch of anything,” as stated in al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ (“The Intermediate Dictionary”). In al-Targhīb (“Encouragement”) (3/226), Abu Ubayd said: “It means an interwoven kinship, like the intertwining of veins.”
The term ḥujzah, with a ḍammah on the unpointed letter ḥāʾ, denotes the place around the waist where the waist-wrapper is fastened. It is said, “He took hold of his ḥujzah,” meaning that he sought refuge in him and sought his aid, as stated in the Dictionary. See also al-Bayhaqi’s al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt (“The Names and Attributes”) (p. 369).
1603 — “Indeed, the one praying is conversing privately with his Lord, so let him consider what he is conversing with Him about; and none of you should recite the Quran aloud over another.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsaṭ (“The Middle Collection”) (no. 4757—my copy): Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Umari narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn Abi Uways narrated to us; my father narrated to me from Muhammad ibn Amr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah and Aisha, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he looked out from his house while the people were praying and reciting aloud, and said to them—then he cited it. He said: “No one narrated it from Muhammad ibn Amr except Abu Uways; his son alone reported it.”
I say: He is truthful, but made errors in hadiths he narrated from memory, as al-Hafiz said. Al-Dhahabi said in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (“The Weak Narrators”): “Truthful. Al-Nasaʾi declared him weak, and Ibn Adi said: ‘He steals hadith, just like his father.’”
Muhammad ibn Amr’s hadiths are good, but he has been contradicted in the chain of transmission for this report; Imam Ahmad said:
