“Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī criticized this, saying: “I say: It is not continuous.”
Al-Ḥākim then cited a supporting narration for it through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAwf, from Umm Salamah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say to his wives: “The one who will show tenderness toward you after I am gone is the truthful and righteous one. O Allah, grant ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf a drink from Salsabil in Paradise.” He said: “The hadith has thus been authenticated from ʿĀʾishah and Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with them both.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
1595 — “A man has the better right to the front of his mount, the head of his bed, and to lead the prayer in his own dwelling.”
Al-Dārimī (2/285), al-Bazzār (55—his supplementary material), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr and al-Awsaṭ (no. 900) narrated it in abbreviated form through Isḥāq ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah, from al-Musayyab ibn Rāfiʿ and Maʿbad ibn Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Khaṭmī—who was governor of Kūfah—who said: “We came to Qays ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah at his home. The caller gave the call to prayer, so we said to Qays: ‘Get up and lead us in prayer.’ He replied: ‘I would not lead people in prayer when I am not their governor.’ Then a man of no lesser standing than he, named ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanẓalah al-Ghasīl, said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said’”—and he mentioned it—“whereupon Qays ibn Saʿd said to one of his servants: ‘So-and-so, get up and lead them in prayer.’”
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. This Isḥāq is weak, as stated in al-Taqrīb. Al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (2/65), after attributing it to those mentioned above apart from al-Dārimī: “It contains Isḥāq ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah, whom Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, and al-Bukhārī declared weak, though Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah and Ibn Ḥibbān considered him reliable.”
