1592 — “This world is lush and sweet. Whoever acquires it rightfully will be blessed therein; yet many a person who wrongfully meddles with the wealth of Allah and the wealth of His Messenger will have nothing but the Fire on the day he meets Allah.”
Al-Tirmidhi (3/277) and Ahmad (6/364 and 378) narrated it through two chains from ʿUbayd Abū al-Walīd Sanūṭā, from Khawlah bint Qays, the wife of Hamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon Hamzah, and they discussed this world. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said this hadith. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith.”
I say: Two trustworthy transmitters narrated from this ʿUbayd, and al-ʿIjlī and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy. He was corroborated by Nuʿmān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh, who narrated it from Khawlah al-Anṣāriyyah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a shortened wording: “There are men who wrongfully meddle with the wealth of Allah, and theirs will be the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it (6/165–166, Fatḥ), and al-Ismāʿīlī added at its beginning: “This world is lush and sweet, and there are men...”
I say: Ahmad also narrated it (6/410) with this addition. Al-Ḥākim narrated it (4/68) through Abū ʿUtbah ibn al-Faraj, who said: Zayd ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd told me, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Ḥamnah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say this hadith.
I say: Both he and al-Dhahabī made no comment on it. Abū ʿUtbah was Aḥmad ibn al-Faraj, and he is weak. I fear that he made an error in its chain of transmission, for al-Tirmidhī and Aḥmad narrated it through two other chains from al-Layth, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from ʿUbayd, from Khawlah, as mentioned above. Allah knows best.
There is also a report on this subject from ʿAmrah bint al-Ḥārith, the sister of the Mother of the Believers Juwayriyyah. It is narrated by Khālid ibn Salamah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Ḍirār, from his paternal aunt ʿAmrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:
