who will fight for the truth, prevailing over those who oppose them, until they fight the Dajjal. And know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had his family perform ʿumrah during the first ten days; no verse was revealed to abrogate that, nor did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid it until he passed on. Thereafter, each person formed whatever opinion Allah willed him to form.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic, and its narrators are those of the two Shaykhs. Although its apparent form is that of a Companion statement, in meaning it is attributed to the Prophet. This is confirmed by two matters:
First: he presented it as an explanation of his words, “the hadith,” by which he plainly meant a report attributed to the Prophet.
Second: he cited alongside it two other reports attributed to the Prophet, indicating that the one before them likewise has that attribution. For this reason, al-Haythami said: “Ahmad narrated it as a Companion statement, though it is virtually attributed to the Prophet; and its narrators are those of the Sahih.”
- “Faith wears out within one of you just as a garment wears out, so ask Allah to renew faith in your hearts.”
Al-Hakim recorded it (1/4) through Ibn Wahb, who said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Maysarah informed me, from Abu Haniʾ al-Khawlani, Humayd ibn Haniʾ, from Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Hubuli, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—and he then quoted it. Al-Hakim said: “Its narrators are trustworthy Egyptians.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: All its narrators are narrators of Muslim, apart from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Maysarah. He is Abu Maysarah al-Hadrami, the Egyptian. To my knowledge, no one declared him trustworthy other than al-Hakim; however, a number of people besides Ibn Wahb narrated from him, and Abu ʿUmar al-Kindi said: “He was a jurist and a man of integrity.” Thus, the hadith is good, if Allah Most High wills. Al-Haythami said of the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (1/52): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir, and its chain of transmission is good.”
