“The one who, when he recites the Quran, is moved to sorrow by it.” Abū Nuʿaym likewise narrated it in al-Ḥilyah (4/19), through al-Ṭabarānī. Therein, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAmr corroborated it, saying: Misʿar ibn Kidām narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Muʿallim, from Ṭāwūs, with the same chain, except that he said: “The one whom, when you hear him reciting, you realize fears Allah.” Ismāʿīl is weak. However, Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn corroborated it in al-Dārimī (2/471), though he did not mention Ibn ʿAbbās in its chain. In this wording, it is more authentic in my view, since it has come through other routes; this is why I relied upon it in The Description of the Prayer. Al-Ḍiyāʾ also narrated it in al-Mukhtārah (63/13/2), through Sufyān, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, with wording like that of the heading. Its narrators are trustworthy. Thus, its chain is authentic if Ibn Jurayj heard it from ʿAṭāʾ. On the one hand, this supports the wording that I deemed authentic; on the other, it shows that the hadith is the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, not of ʿĀʾishah.
- “The best servants of Allah Most High on the Day of Resurrection are those who praise Him abundantly.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, from the hadith of ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, attributed to the Prophet, and it contains narrators whom I do not know, as al-Haythamī said (10/95). However, it is supported by what Aḥmad recorded (4/434) through Muṭarrif, who said: ʿImrān said to me: “Today I am relating to you a hadith by which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, may benefit you after today. Know that the best servants of Allah Most High on the Day of Resurrection are those who praise Him abundantly; and know that there will never cease to be a group among the people of Islam
