al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl narrated to me from his father, who narrated to me from his father, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who attributed it to the Prophet. He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī refuted him, saying: “I say: No, by Allah. Al-Qāsim is abandoned and utterly unsound; more than one scholar declared ʿUbayd weak, though Abū Ḥātim was lenient concerning him.”
- Al-Bukhārī also recorded it in al-Tārīkh (4/1/400), from Lubayd ibn Ḥayyān, Abū Jandal, who heard Maʿbad ibn Hilāl, who heard Anas relate from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: He then cited it.
All its narrators are trustworthy except this Lubayd. Ibn Abī Ḥātim gave him a brief biographical notice (3/2/181), without mentioning any criticism or commendation of him. Yet it has another route recorded by al-Dārimī (1/27) and Aḥmad (3/144), through ʿUmar ibn Abī ʿAmr, from Anas, who attributed it to the Prophet, with the wording: “I shall be the first of mankind for whom the earth will be split open from my skull on the Day of Resurrection, and this is no boast. I shall be given the Banner of Praise, and this is no boast. I am the master of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, and this is no boast. I shall be the first to enter Paradise on the Day of Resurrection, and this is no boast. I shall come to the gate of Paradise and take hold of its ring...” —to the end of the hadith.
I say: Its chain is good; its narrators are those of the two Shaykhs.
- From ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd, who attributed to the Prophet a similar report. Aḥmad recorded it (3/2), as did al-Tirmidhī (4/140) and Ibn Mājah (2/581–582). Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good hadith.”
I say: Ibn Judʿān has some weakness; thus, his hadith is good as corroborative evidence.
- From ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, who attributed to the Prophet a report similar to the hadith of Abū Saʿīd.
