There is another corroborating report from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn ʿAjlān, who said: “I heard Abū Yazīd al-Madanī say: I heard Abū Hurayrah say...” He then cited it as attributed to the Prophet, except for the words, “and this is no boast.” This chain is good as corroborative evidence. Ibn Maʿīn declared Abū Yazīd al-Madanī trustworthy, and al-Bukhārī included his reports. Regarding ʿAbd al-Salām ibn ʿAjlān, Abū Ḥātim said: “His hadith may be recorded.” Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt and said: “He makes mistakes and contradicts others.”
Note: Ibn Judʿān’s report from Anas occurs in al-Tirmidhī’s lengthy hadith from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd, attributed to the Prophet: “I am the master of the children of Adam...” It includes: “They will come to me, and I shall go with them.” Ibn Judʿān said: Anas said: “It is as though I can see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: ‘Then I shall take hold of the ring of the gate of Paradise and rattle it.’” That is, I shall move it.
1571 — “I am the master of the children of Adam.”
I say: It has come through several routes:
- Ibn Saʿd recorded it (1/20): Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab al-Qarqasānī informed us; al-Awzāʿī informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Hurayrah, who said. And al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā informed us; Hirqal ibn Ziyād informed us, from al-Awzāʿī, who said: Abū ʿAmmār narrated to me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Farrūkh narrated to me; Abū Hurayrah narrated to me, who said: He then cited it as attributed to the Prophet.
I say: The second chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. Ibn Saʿd also recorded it (7/59) in a fuller form, and I have traced its sources in Sharḥ al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah, p. 107.
- Al-Ḥākim also recorded it (2/604–605) through the route of ʿUbayd ibn Isḥāq al-ʿAṭṭār, who narrated to us:
