1569 — “I am a descendant of the ʿAwātik.”
Al-Bayhaqī recorded it in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (vol. 1, chapter on the Prophet’s prophecies), through the route of Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabāḥ, who said: Hushaym narrated to us from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said: Siyābah informed us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Ḥunayn: “...” He was corroborated by ʿUmar ibn ʿAwf al-Wāsiṭī, who narrated to us from Hushaym, who reported it from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd with the same chain. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (6724). Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (8/219): “Its narrators are the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ.”
It has also been reported from Hushaym, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ. He then reported it by way of Abū ʿAwānah, from Qatādah, as a report directly attributed to the Prophet. Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had three female ancestors from Sulaym, all named ʿĀtikah. When he took pride in his lineage, he would say: ‘I am a descendant of the ʿAwātik.’” Al-Bayhaqī said: “I have been informed that one of them was the mother of ʿAdnān, another the mother of Hāshim, and the third was his grandmother through Zuhrāh.” Ibn Wahb also recorded it in al-Jāmiʿ (1), from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, as a report directly attributed to the Prophet, adding: “from Sulaym.”
I say: I have found a supporting narration with the wording: “Take it, for I am a descendant of the ʿAwātik.” Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (15/128/1) from Isḥāq ibn Zayd, who said: Muḥammad ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us from Makḥūl, from Jābir, who said: “I do not blame anyone for going to the utmost in two matters: when racing his horse and when fighting, for I
