It was also declared authentic by Ibn Hibban (181 and 182) and Ibn al-Jarud in al-Muntaqa (86). See Sahih Abi Dawud (145).
1560 — “Control your hand”; in another version: “Do not extend your hand except toward what is good.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Tarikh (1/1/444), and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (no. 818), through Sadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Dimashqi, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAli, from Sulayman ibn Habib, who said: Al-Aswad ibn Asram al-Muharibi informed me: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, advise me.’ He said”—and then mentioned it. Al-Bukhari said: “There is some question concerning its chain of transmission.”
I say: The reason for this is that this Sadaqah—Abu Muʿawiyah al-Samin—is weak. However, he was not alone in narrating it. Al-Tabarani (817) also recorded it through two routes from Abu al-Muʿafa Muhammad ibn Wahb ibn Abi Karimah al-Harrani, who said: Muhammad ibn Salamah informed us, from Abu ʿAbd al-Rahim, from ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn Bakht, from Sulayman ibn Habib al-Muharibi, from al-Aswad ibn Asram al-Muharibi, that he came to Medina with well-fattened camels during a time of scarcity and drought in the land. When the people of Medina saw them, they marvelled at how fat they were. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he sent for them. They were brought, and he went out to inspect them. Looking at them, he said: “Why did you bring these camels?” He replied: “I wanted to obtain a servant in exchange for them.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Who has a servant?”
ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I do, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Bring him.” So ʿUthman brought him. When al-Aswad saw him, he said: “That is the kind I want.” He said: “Take him; he is yours.” Al-Aswad took him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took possession of his camels. Al-Aswad then said: “O Messenger of Allah, advise me.” He said: “Can you control your tongue?” He replied: “What can I control if I do not control it?” He said: “Then can you control your hand?” He replied: “What can I control if I do not control my hand?” He said: “Do not say with your tongue anything but what is right, and do not extend your hand except toward what is good.”
