I say: This chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. He recorded it in his Sahih (8/34), but without the words: “For it is a charity for you.” The same is the case in al-Adab and in one version recorded by Ahmad. Al-Qudaʿi (63/1) also narrated it through a weak chain from Anas, as a report traced back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Muslim’s wording is: “Remove …” This is also one of Ahmad’s versions.
1559 — “Wipe over the leather socks for three days”—that is, while travelling.
Ahmad (5/213) and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (no. 3755) recorded it through several routes from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd al-Samad al-ʿAmmi, who said: Mansur informed us, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from ʿAmr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, from Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Jadali, from Khuzaymah ibn Thabit al-Ansari, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. He added: “Had we asked him for more, he would have granted us more.” Jarir also followed Mansur in narrating it through the same chain. Al-Tabarani (3757) and Ibn Hibban (183) recorded it, and the addition appears in their versions.
I say: This is how it appears in this version, without specifying the traveller. Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it more fully, reporting it from Mansur through the same chain, with the wording: “We asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about wiping over the leather socks. He granted the traveller a concession of three days and their nights, and the resident one day and one night.” Ahmad (5/213) and al-Tabarani (3754) recorded it. This chain is authentic. Abu Dawud, other compilers of Sunan works, Ahmad, al-Tabarani, and others also recorded the hadith through many other routes from Ibrahim along this chain. Some of them did not mention ʿAmr ibn Maymun al-Awdi.
