I say: I did not find it in the Book of Supplication or the Book of Knowledge in al-Mustadrak; and Allah knows best. Then, by means of my index to al-Mustadrak, I found it in its section on etiquette (4/290). Al-Hakim declared it authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, and al-Dhahabi concurred.

There is also a supporting report from Muʿadh ibn Jabal, similar to the hadith of Qays. Ahmad narrated it (5/228, 242, and 244) through Hammad ibn Salamah, from ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Abu Razin, from him. Its narrators are trustworthy, so the chain is authentic were it not for ʿAtaʾ’s confusion in his later years. Hammad heard from him both before and after that confusion, contrary to the treatment of al-Mundhiri and others.

Then I found the hadith of Jabir in al-Tabarani’s al-Awsat (3684) and al-Saghir (215—al-Rawd), through ʿAbd al-Majid ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Abi Rawwad, who said: Bahlat ibn ʿAbbad informed us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who said: “We complained to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about the scorching ground, but he did not grant us a concession, and said: ‘Increase ...’” The hadith is given with the wording found in the two Jamiʿ compilations. Al-Tabarani said: “It is narrated from Jabir only through this chain, and Bahlat did not transmit with a chain anything other than this hadith.” In al-Saghir he added: “In my view, he is trustworthy.” Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat. Ibn Abi Hatim said in al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil (1/1/440): “Bahlat ibn ʿAbbad narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir a rejected hadith. ʿAbd al-Majid ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Abi Rawwad narrated from him.”
