“It has no basis among Qatadah’s hadiths, and Bahr is not corroborated in narrating it.” He then reported that al-Bukhari said of him: “They did not consider him strong. No hadith establishing this text has been transmitted, and its narration contains some weakness.”
Ibn ʿAdi also narrated it through Bahr (2/39) and said: “The weakness in his hadith is evident, and he is closer to being weak.”
Ibn ʿAdi then narrated it (2/213) from Abu ʿAbbad ibn Saʿid al-Maqburi, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Few among my Ummah reach the age of seventy.” He said: “With regard to Abu ʿAbbad, ʿAbdullah ibn Saʿid al-Maqburi, weakness is evident in most of what he narrates.”
However, it appears that he was not alone in narrating it, for al-Suyuti attributed it to al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah with the same wording. Al-Manawi said: “Its chain includes Muhammad ibn Rabiʿah, whom al-Dhahabi listed in his Supplement to The Weak Narrators and said: ‘He is unknown.’ As for Kamil Abu al-ʿAla, Ibn Hibban criticized him.”
I say: Kamil was one of Muslim’s narrators, and his hadith is good. Al-Taqrib states: “Truthful, though he makes mistakes; of the seventh tier.” Kamil ibn Rabiʿah is known for his truthfulness, as mentioned earlier in hadith 757, which is similar to this one. Thus, in my view, the hadith is good in its own right, or at least good in view of its combined routes of transmission.
It has also been narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording of the heading. Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir (no. 13594) through Saʿid ibn Rashid al-Sammak, from ʿAtaʾ, from him.
