- “Allah has added for you another prayer—the witr—so perform it between the ʿIshāʾ prayer and the Fajr prayer.”
It was recorded by Imām Aḥmad (6/7) and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/100/1) through two chains from Ibn al-Mubārak, who said: “Saʿīd ibn Yazīd informed us; he said: Ibn Hubayra narrated to me from Abū Tamīm al-Jayshānī that ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ addressed the people on Friday and said, ‘Abū Baṣra related to me that the Prophet ﷺ said…,’ and then he quoted the ḥadīth.”
Abū Tamīm added: “Then Abū Dharr took me by the hand, walked with me in the mosque to Abū Baṣra and said, ‘Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say what ʿAmr has just said?’ Abū Baṣra replied, ‘I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ ”
I remark: This chain is sound; every one of its narrators is trustworthy and appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
Saʿīd ibn Yazīd is Abū Shujāʿ al-Iskandarānī.
He is corroborated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Lahīʿa, who said: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Hubayra narrated it to us” with the same content. This version was reported by Aḥmad (6/379), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/250), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (1/104/2), and al-Dūlābī in al-Kunā (1/13) through three routes from Ibn Lahīʿa.
Its isnād in al-Ṭaḥāwī is authentic, as I clarified in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl no. 416.
The ḥadīth has additional chains from the Prophet ﷺ, some of which I cited there, but the present route is the principal one, and thus I have restricted myself to it here.
Shaykh al-Kattānī and his colleague Ustādh al-Zuhaylī, in their verification of Tuhfat al-Fuquhāʾ (1/1/355), listed a sizeable batch of chains—ten Companions in all, including one route from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—yet that route is flimsy, and they overlooked this sound chain!
