“It was narrated by al-Tabarani, and its chain includes Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Zubalah, who is abandoned.”
I say: Kurayb’s chain is free of him, hence the need to point this out. It also has a corroborating report from the hadith of Aishah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording except for the word “after”; however, it mentions Mary first. Al-Hakim narrated it (3/185 and 186) and made no comment on it, while al-Dhahabi said: “Authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs.” And it is as he said.
1509 — “Indeed, the best means of changing this gray hair are henna and katam.”
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (2/195—Taziyah edition), al-Nasai (2/279), al-Tirmidhi (3/55—Tuhfah edition), Ibn Majah (2/380), Ibn Hibban (1475), Ahmad (5/147, 150, 154, 156, and 169), Ibn Sad in al-Tabaqat (1/439), and al-Tabarani (1638), through two chains from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from Abu al-Aswad, from Abu Dharr, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith. Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali’s name was Zalim ibn Amr ibn Sufyan.”
I say: He is trustworthy and one of the narrators relied upon by the two Shaykhs; the same is true of Abdullah ibn Buraydah. Thus, it is authentic according to their conditions. It is therefore astonishing that al-Hakim did not include it. It cannot be said that he omitted it because Kahmas narrated it as a mursal report, saying: “From Abdullah ibn Buraydah, that it had reached him that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said...” Then he related it. Al-Nasai narrated this version.
This cannot be argued, because his methodological position is that an addition from a trustworthy narrator is accepted—and that is correct, subject to qualifications well known in hadith methodology. Moreover, two trustworthy narrators transmitted it from Abdullah ibn Buraydah with a connected chain traced back to the Prophet, as mentioned above; their addition is therefore unanimously accepted, especially since it has another chain from Abu Dharr, narrated by Abu Ishaq from Ibn Abi Layla from him, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
