I say: Muslim did not include any reports from this al-Maʿnī, though he is trustworthy. Thus, the hadith is authentic, but does not meet Muslim’s criteria. It has corroborating reports, which may be found at the beginning of Tafsir Ibn Kathir. Al-Manawi left it ungraded!
1500 — “The best Hajj is loudly proclaiming the talbiyah and shedding sacrificial blood.”
Abu Bakr ibn Saʿid al-Qadi recorded it in The Musnad of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (1/74), saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Balkhi narrated to us; Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us; al-Dahhak ibn ʿUthman al-Hizami narrated to us from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Ibn ʿUmar, from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked, “What is the best Hajj?” He replied, “Loudly proclaiming the talbiyah and shedding sacrificial blood.”
He then recorded it (1/101), as did al-Darimi (2/31), al-Tirmidhi (2/84, Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi), and Ibn Majah (2/217), through various routes from Ibn Abi Fudayk, with this chain, except that it has ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ in place of Ibn ʿUmar. It was then narrated through Saʿid ibn ʿUthman and al-Dahhak, both from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ, from Abu Bakr.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “It is a singular hadith. We know it only through the hadith of Ibn Abi Fudayk, from al-Dahhak ibn ʿUthman. Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir did not hear from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ. Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir did narrate hadiths other than this one from Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ, from his father. Abu Nuʿaym al-Tahhan, Dirar ibn Sard, narrated this hadith from Ibn Abi Fudayk, from al-Dahhak ibn ʿUthman, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ, from his father, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; but Dirar erred in it.”
Abu ʿIsa said: “I heard Ahmad ibn al-Hasan say: Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: ‘Whoever narrates this hadith from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from the son of ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yarbuʿ, from his father, has erred.’ He said: ‘And I heard Muhammad say: I mentioned to him the hadith of Dirar ibn Sard from Abu Fudayk, and he said, “It is erroneous.” I said, “Others besides him have also narrated it from Ibn Abi Fudayk in the same manner.” He replied, “Nothing to that effect; they only narrated it from Ibn Abi Fudayk and did not mention Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman in it.” And I saw him deem Dirar ibn Sard weak.’”
