“Worship Allah as though you see Him; count yourself among the dead; remember Allah at every stone and every tree; and whenever you commit an evil deed, perform alongside it a good deed—secretly for what was done secretly, and openly for what was done openly.”
1475 — “Worship Allah as though you see Him; count yourself among the dead; remember Allah at every stone and every tree; and whenever you commit an evil deed, perform alongside it a good deed—secretly for what was done secretly, and openly for what was done openly.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir from Abu Salamah, who said: Muʿadh said, “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, advise me.’” He said, and then mentioned it. Al-Haythami said (4/218): “Al-Tabarani narrated it, but Abu Salamah did not meet Muʿadh, while its narrators are reliable.” Al-Mundhiri said (4/132): “Al-Tabarani narrated it with a good chain of transmission, except that there is a break between Abu Salamah and Muʿadh.” Al-Munawi said after it: “The compiler has indicated that it is good.”
I say: It is indeed worthy of this, for it has dispersed corroborating reports in several hadiths. The preceding hadith corroborates the first two sentences. See also the earlier hadith no. 1175, and hadith no. 1070 in al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi ʿAsim.
1476 — “O Guardian of Islam and its people, keep me steadfast upon Islam until I meet You upon it.”
Al-Silafi transmitted it in al-Fawaʾid al-Muntaqah min Usul Samaʿat al-Raʾis al-Thaqafi (2/165/1) through Yahya ibn Salih, who said: Sulayman ibn ʿAta narrated to us from Abu al-Wasil, from Anas, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say...” He then mentioned it.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. This Abu Wasil is ʿAbd al-Hamid ibn Wasil al-Bahili. Ibn Abi Hatim said (3/1/18):
