al-Sindī ibn ʿAbdawayh, the trustworthy narrator. See the preceding hadith (1453).
Al-Khatib also narrated it in his Tarikh (9/107) through another route, from Ismaʿil ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, who said: Muhammad ibn Mutarrif al-Hamdani narrated it to me, with the same chain. I do not know whether the name Sahl was corrupted into Ismaʿil by one of the copyists, or whether the report appears this way in al-Khatib’s work. I have not found, among the narrators of this generation, anyone named Ismaʿil ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman; so it appears that it was corrupted by one of the copyists, or that one of the transmitters in the chain to him erred concerning it. And Allah knows best.
The first sentence of the hadith was narrated by Abu Nuʿaym in Akhbar Isfahan (2/213), and by Abu al-Husayn al-Bushanjī in Al-Manzum wa al-Manthur (178/1), from al-Husayn ibn ʿAlwan al-Kufi, who said: Hisham ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us from his father, from Aisha, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. But this al-Husayn was a liar and a fabricator. It was he who narrated, through this chain, the hadith: “Four things are never satisfied with four: a woman with a man ...”—the hadith, which has already been cited. Thus, reliance is upon the preceding report.
Al-Suyuti included the hadith in Al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir with the wording of Aisha’s hadith, stating: “Al-Khatib narrated it from Abu Hurayrah, and Ibn Lal from Aisha.” Al-Munawi said: “Al-Daylami also narrated it from her.” Yet al-Munawi made no comment at all on either of them!
1462 — “Do as you wish, for whatever Allah decrees will come to pass; not every drop of semen results in a child.”
Muslim narrated it (4/159–160), as did Ahmad (3/26, 47, 59, 82, and 93), whose wording is cited here, and Ibn Abi ʿAsim in Al-Sunnah (364 and 365), through several routes from Abu al-Waddak Jabr ibn Nawf, from Abu Saʿid, who said: “We took female captives on the day of Hunayn, and we wished to obtain their ransom. So we asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about coitus interruptus, and he replied,” then he mentioned it. Muslim’s wording is:
