money, and she inclined to it. The girl, too, yielded to her mother’s desire, and the two of them refused, until the matter was brought before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Qudamah ibn Mazʿun said: “O Messenger of Allah, she is my brother’s daughter, whom he entrusted to my care. I married her to her cousin, ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar. I did not fall short with regard to her welfare or suitability, but she is a woman and has merely yielded to her mother’s desire!” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “She is an orphan, and she may not be married without her consent.” He said: “By Allah, she was taken from me after I had acquired authority over her, and they married her to al-Mughirah ibn Shuʿbah.”
Ahmad recorded it (2/130), as did al-Daraqutni (p. 385), through Ibn Ishaq, who said: ʿUmar ibn Husayn ibn ʿAbdullah, the client of the family of Hatib, narrated to me from Nafiʿ, the client of Ibn ʿUmar, from him. This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are those relied upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, apart from Ibn Ishaq, who explicitly stated that he heard it directly. Moreover, he was corroborated: al-Daraqutni and al-Hakim (2/167) narrated it from Ibn Abi Dhiʾb, from ʿUmar ibn Husayn, through the same chain, in a similar but abridged form. Al-Hakim’s version contains: “Do not marry women until you have sought their permission; if they remain silent, that is their permission.” He said: “It is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and it is as they said. Its wording will appear in its proper place.
1460 — “Allah’s wrath grew intense against people who did this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him”—while he was pointing to his incisor tooth. “Allah’s wrath grew intense against a man whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, kills in the path of Allah.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it (5/37), as did Muslim (5/179), whose wording has been cited, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah. Al-Bukhari then recorded, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas, that he said: “Allah’s wrath grew intense against one whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, killed in the path of Allah. Allah’s wrath grew intense against people who bloodied the face of Allah’s Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Thus al-Bukhari recorded it as a statement of Ibn ʿAbbas, as did al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir in al-Bidayah (4/29). Yet it necessarily has the ruling of a report attributed to the Prophet. It does occur as a report attributed to the Prophet in a copy of al-Bukhari upon which al-ʿAyni’s commentary (8/225) is based; consult it, where it reads: “From Ibn ʿAbbas, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said...” I do not know whether this is an addition by one of the copyists or whether it is established in some copies of al-Bukhari. And Allah knows best.
