that he went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to the prayer ground and found the people engaged in trade. He then mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, and al-Hakim also recorded it and declared it authentic. However, this Ismaʿil is unknown, as I explained in Hadiths on Sales and later in al-Taʿliq al-Raghib (3/29). When I came across this route through al-Baraʾ, I hastened to cite it in order to strengthen the hadith. Praise be to Allah for granting success. I therefore included it in Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib (16/12), after having left a blank space for it in al-Mishkat (2799). This authentication should therefore be entered there.
1459 — “Consult women concerning their own affairs.” It was said: “But a virgin is shy, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “A previously married woman expresses her wishes with her tongue, while a virgin’s consent is her silence.”
It was recorded (4/192) through al-Layth ibn Saʿd, who said: ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Husayn al-Meccan narrated to me, from ʿAli ibn ʿAdi al-Kindi, from his father, attributing it directly to the Prophet. This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and were used by the six canonical collections, apart from ʿAdi ibn ʿAdi, who was a trustworthy jurist, as stated in al-Taqrib.
It also has a corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, which explains the occasion of the hadith and reads as follows: Ibn ʿUmar said to ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab: “Propose marriage to Salih’s daughter.” He replied: “He has orphans, and he would not favor us over them.” So ʿAbdullah went to his uncle Zayd ibn al-Khattab to make the proposal. Zayd went to Salih and said: “ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar has sent me to you to propose marriage to your daughter.” He replied: “I have orphans, and I would not debase my own flesh while elevating yours. I call you to witness that I have married her to so-and-so.” Her mother, however, desired that she marry ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar, so she came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “O Prophet of Allah, ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar proposed marriage to my daughter, but her father married her to an orphan under his care without consulting her.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent for Salih and said: “You married your daughter without consulting her?” He replied: “Yes.” He said: “Consult women concerning their own affairs.”
