Ibn Numayr is reported to have said of him: “A liar.” Al-Bukhari is reported to have said that he was accused of fabricating hadiths. In al-Mizan, it states: “Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: ‘A liar.’” He then cited this hadith as one of his rejected narrations. All the scholars agreed in deeming this al-ʿAttar weak, except al-ʿIjli, who said in his book al-Thiqāt: “There is no harm in him.” Therefore, no attention should be paid to this view, contrary to the approach of al-Suyuti in al-Taʿaqqubāt (p. 38), even though Ibn ʿIraq followed him in Tanzīh al-Sharīʿah (265/2), for it is an anomalous view that departs from the consensus—particularly as it conflicts with their principle that negative criticism takes precedence over accreditation. Ibn Abi Hatim (2/255) related from his father: “It is a rejected hadith with no known basis.”
The second is Husayn ibn ʿAlwan, from Thawr ibn Yazid, through the same chain. Ibn ʿAdi recorded it (96/2) and said: “Most of Ibn ʿAlwan’s hadiths are fabricated, and he is counted among those who fabricate hadiths.”
The third is ʿAmr ibn Yahya al-Qurashi: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Thawr ibn Yazid, through the same chain. Abu Nuʿaym recorded it in Akhbār Isfahan (2/217). Regarding this al-Qurashi, Abu Nuʿaym said: “Abandoned in hadith transmission.” Al-Dhahabi said: “He brought a hadith, nearly fabricated, from Shuʿbah, from Thawr …” He then cited for him another hadith with the wording: “The hearts of the children of Adam …” It has preceded in the other book (511).
- As for the hadith of ʿAli, al-Khalʿi narrated it in al-Fawāʾid: Abu al-ʿAbbas informed us—
