I then found what supports this: al-Tahawi reported in Sharh al-Maʿani (2/362), through Ziyad ibn al-Mundhir, who said: Abu Burdah ibn Abi Musa narrated to us; al-Agharr al-Muzani narrated to us: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us with his hands raised, saying: ‘O people, seek your Lord’s forgiveness, then repent to Him. For by Allah, (I) seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him one hundred times a day.’” However, Ziyad ibn al-Mundhir—Abu al-Jarud, the blind man—was declared a liar by Ibn Maʿin.
1453 — “Seek to accomplish your needs by keeping them secret, for everyone endowed with a blessing is envied.”
It has been reported from the hadiths of Muʿadh ibn Jabal, ʿAli ibn Abi Talib, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas, Abu Hurayrah, and Abu Burdah in mursal form.
- As for the hadith of Muʿadh, it is narrated from Thawr ibn Yazid al-Shami, from Khalid ibn Maʿdan, from Muʿadh ibn Jabal, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with this wording. A number of weak narrators relate it from Thawr:
The first is Saʿid ibn Salam al-ʿAttar, the one-eyed, who narrated to us from Thawr with it. Al-ʿUqayli recorded it in al-Duʿafaʾ (p. 151); al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Saghir (p. 246, Indian edition), as well as in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir and al-Muʿjam al-Awsat; al-Ruyani in his Musnad (folio 250/1); al-Khalʿi in al-Fawaʾid (2/58/2); Ibn ʿAdi in al-Kamil (182/1); Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah (5/215 and 6/96); al-Qudaʿi (60/1); al-Bayhaqi in Shuʿab al-Iman (2/291/1); and al-Kalabadhi in Miftah al-Maʿani (35/1, no. 45)—all of them from Saʿid with it. Al-ʿUqayli said: “No one corroborates him in it, and it is known only through him.” Ibn ʿAdi said: “Weakness is evident in his hadith and his narration.”
