the hadith of Hisham ibn ʿAmmar concerning musical instruments, which al-Bukhari narrated from him using the wording, “He said,” as mentioned in its proper place.
1450 — “Be independent of people, even if only with a tooth-stick.”
It was reported by al-Bazzar (96), al-Tabarani (3/154/1), al-Mukhallis in al-Fawaʾid al-Muntaqah (6/66/2), and Abu Muhammad al-Darrab in Dhamm al-Riyaʾ (1/292/2), through ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muslim, from al-Aʿmash, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas, in a report attributed to the Prophet. Al-Diyaʾ reported it in al-Mukhtarah (227/1) from al-Mukhallis, and from al-Tabarani through two other routes from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muslim. He then said: “Hamdan ibn ʿAli said: I asked Ahmad about the hadith of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Qasamli: ‘Be independent of people.’ He replied: ‘Rejected. I have not seen any hadith more objectionable than it.’” (See al-Istidrāk, no. 343/4.)
I say: Perhaps he meant merely that it was singular, which does not entail weakness, just as he described the hadith of istikharah narrated by al-Bukhari as rejected. Otherwise, the chain of transmission of the hadith under discussion is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Hafiz al-ʿIraqi said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Haythami and al-Sakhawi said: “Its narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Manawi commented: “Accordingly, the compiler’s symbol marking it as weak is incorrect.”
I say: Strangely, the copy of al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir on which al-Manawi’s commentary was printed bears the symbol indicating authenticity! Al-Mundhiri said (2/9): “It was reported by al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani with a good chain of transmission, and by al-Bayhaqi.”
1451 — “Make use of this House, for it has been destroyed twice and will be raised up the third time.”
It was reported by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Sahih (1/252/2), and by al-Daylami
