(p. 179) and by al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (3/92/2) and Ibn ʿAdi (27/2), through three weak chains of transmission from Dawud ibn ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas, from his father, from his grandfather, attributed to the Prophet. Thus, its chain of transmission is good. Dawud was corroborated by his two brothers, ʿIsa and ʿAbd al-Samad, with the wording: “Hang the whip where the members of the household can see it, for it is a means of discipline for them.” (See Addendum no. 432/1.)
1447 — “Hang the whip where the members of the household can see it, for it is a means of discipline for them.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (3/92/2) through Salam ibn Sulayman, who said: ʿIsa and ʿAbd al-Samad informed us; ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas informed us, from their father, from Ibn ʿAbbas, attributed to the Prophet. This Salam was Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Madaʾini al-Dimashqi. Abu Hatim said: “He is not strong.” But he was corroborated by al-Mahdi, the father of Harun al-Rashid, who narrated from ʿAbd al-Samad alone. Al-Khatib (12/203) and Ibn ʿAsakir also narrated it in al-Tarikh (13/307/2). Thus, the hadith is good, Allah willing.
Al-Hafiz al-Haythami said (8/106): “It was narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and al-Awsat, and by al-Bazzar; al-Tabarani’s chain of transmission in both is good.”
I say: Al-Bazzar narrated it in his Musnad (p. 249—its supplementary narrations) through Mundal, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Dawud ibn ʿAli, through his aforementioned chain from Ibn ʿAbbas, with the wording: “Place the whip where the servant can see it.” Ibn Abi Layla had poor retention, and Mundal—ibn ʿAli al-ʿAnazi—was weak. (See Addendum no. 432/19.)
1448 — “No deed done by the son of Adam is better than prayer, reconciling relations between people, and good character.”
Al-Bukhari narrated it in al-Tarikh (1/1/63) from Muhammad ibn Hajjaj, who said: Yunus ibn Maysarah ibn Halbas narrated to us, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: and he then cited it.
