1442 — “The people most severely punished by Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be those who inflicted the harshest punishment upon people in this world.”
Ahmad (4/90), al-Humaydi (562), al-Tabarani in The Great Dictionary (1/190/2), and al-Diya in Selections from His Transmitted Auditions in Marw (36/1) narrated it from Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah, who said: ʿAmr ibn Dinar told us: Abu Najih informed me, from Khalid ibn Hakim ibn Hizam, who said: “Abu ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah took some action against one of the local people over a matter, so Khalid ibn al-Walid spoke to him about it. He was told, ‘You have angered the commander.’ Khalid replied, ‘I did not intend to anger him, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say’”—then he cited it.
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators used by Muslim, apart from Khalid ibn Hakim, who is also trustworthy, as Ibn Abi Hatim (1/2/324) narrated from Ibn Maʿin.
Note: The Musnad of Ahmad gives “Ibn Abi Najih,” but the correct reading is “Abu Najih.”
1443 — “Seek refuge in Allah from the evil of a permanent neighbor, for a traveling neighbor, whenever he wishes to leave, leaves.”
Al-Hakim (1/532) narrated it through ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq, from Saʿid al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say this. Al-Hakim said: “This hadith is authentic according to the standards of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. It is as they said, except that this ʿAbd al-Rahman—the Qurashi, their client—has received slight criticism regarding his memory; thus, his hadith is good.
Ahmad (2/346) also narrated it through this route with the wording: “Seek Allah’s protection from the evil of a permanent neighbor, for a traveling neighbor, whenever he wishes to leave, leaves.”
