and he mentioned the hadith. Abdullah said: “There are people here who narrate it from Abu al-Yaman, from Shuʿayb, from al-Zuhri.” He said: “This is not among al-Zuhri’s hadiths; rather, it is among the hadiths of Ibn Abi al-Husayn.”
He then narrated from Saʿid ibn ʿAmr al-Bardhaʿi, who said: I said to Muhammad ibn Yahya concerning the hadith of Anas from Umm Habibah—the hadith of Shuʿayb ibn Abi Hamzah—“Did Abu al-Yaman narrate it to you, saying, ‘From Ibn Abi al-Husayn’?” Muhammad ibn Yahya replied, “Yes; he narrated it to us from his original copy, from Ibn Abi al-Husayn.” I said, “More than one person narrated it to us from Abu al-Yaman, saying, ‘From al-Zuhri.’” He replied: “They prompted him to attribute it to al-Zuhri!”
I said: “Did Yahya ibn Maʿin travel to him before you or after you?” This was because Yahya had narrated this from Abu al-Yaman, saying, “From al-Zuhri.” Muhammad ibn Yahya replied, “He travelled to him after me.” I said: “It is said that he heard only one hadith from Shuʿayb ibn Abi Hamzah, and that the rest were received by presentation.” He replied: “I do not know of that.”
He then narrated from Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad ibn Aban al-Harrani, who said: I asked Yahya ibn Maʿin about Abu al-Yaman’s hadith—al-Zuhri’s hadith from Anas, from Umm Habibah. Yahya said: “I asked Abu al-Yaman, and he said: ‘The hadith is al-Zuhri’s hadith. Whoever recorded it from me as al-Zuhri’s hadith was correct, while whoever recorded it from me as a hadith of Ibn Abi al-Husayn was mistaken. I had merely written it at the end of the hadith of Ibn Abi al-Husayn, then I erred and narrated it as a hadith of Ibn Abi al-Husayn. It is authentic as a hadith of al-Zuhri.’” This is what Yahya said.
He then narrated by way of Ibrahim ibn Hani al-Naysaburi, who said: “Abu al-Yaman told us: ‘The hadith is al-Zuhri’s hadith. I erred when I narrated it to you as a hadith of Ibn Abi al-Husayn, because I had turned over a page.’”
I say: Al-Hakim also narrated it by this route and commented: “This is as clear as taking someone by the hand, for Ibrahim ibn Hani is trustworthy and reliable.”
I say: Imam Yahya ibn Maʿin likewise confirmed this, as mentioned above. Thus, we have established with certainty that the hadith is narrated by Abu al-Yaman, from Shuʿayb, from al-Zuhri, from Anas. Therefore, those imams who held, as noted earlier, that it has no basis relied only on what Abu al-Yaman had narrated at first. But now that his retraction of this and his definitive assertion that the hadith is al-Zuhri’s hadith have been established, there remained nothing to support their view
