“And who is he?” They replied, “It belongs to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.” He said: “Had I not known of your protective jealousy, I would have entered it.” ʿUmar said: “Would I feel protective jealousy toward you, O Messenger of Allah?”
Al-Tirmidhī (2/293), Ibn Ḥibbān (2188), and Aḥmad (3/107 and 179) narrated it through several routes from Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, authentic, singular hadith.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. The addition is found in Aḥmad’s version, whose chain contains only three narrators. It also has another route: Ḥammād ibn Salamah said: Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī and Ḥumayd narrated to us from Anas, with similar wording. It includes the addition: “He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, even if there were anyone toward whom I might feel protective jealousy, I would never feel it toward you.’”
Aḥmad narrated it (3/191), as did Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (1035), though he did not mention Ḥumayd in its chain of transmission. Ibn Ḥibbān also narrated it through his route (2189).
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and others also narrated a similar report from Jābir, but without the words: “They said, ‘It belongs to a young man from Quraysh,’ and I thought that I was the one.” Its wording has previously appeared under hadith 1405.
1424 — “The leading women of the people of Paradise, after Mary daughter of ʿImrān, are Fāṭimah, Khadījah, and Āsiyah, Pharaoh’s wife.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it (3/150/2) from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah, from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. It has two corroborating reports:
