This is what he said, although a number of people narrated from him, including Israʾīl and Aḥmad ibn Bashīr al-Kūfī. Abū Ḥātim said: “He is weak in hadith; his reports are those of an ordinary shaykh.” Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him and said: “He makes many mistakes.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.”
1422 — “Whoever withholds his surplus water or surplus pasture, Allah will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Aḥmad recorded it (2/179 and 221) through the route of Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, who is weak. However, he was not alone in narrating it. Aḥmad also recorded it (2/183) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Rāshid, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr wrote to an agent of his who managed some land for him, instructing him not to withhold his surplus water, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say it—then he mentioned something similar to it.
This chain is good, except that it is interrupted between Sulaymān and Ibn ʿAmr. Yet the hadith is good when its two chains are considered together. I have also found a corroborating report from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “Whoever withholds his surplus water in this world, Allah will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection, saying: ‘Today I withhold My bounty, just as you withheld that which your hands did not produce.’”
Abū al-Shaykh recorded it in al-Ṭabaqāt (folio 63/1–2), from al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from him. Regarding this al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Weak in hadith, despite his worship and virtue.”
I say: Someone like him may be used as corroboration; thus, the hadith is authentic on account of it, if Allah Most High wills.
1423 — “I entered Paradise and found myself before a palace of gold. I said: ‘Whose palace is this?’ They said: ‘It belongs to a young man from Quraysh.’ I thought that I was the one, so I said:”
