al-Qurashī al-Madanī, narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥasan, from his father, from his grandfather, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ‘Aṭā’ ibn Yasār, from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “It was said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when a group passes by and one of them offers the greeting of peace, does that suffice on their behalf?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ It was then said, ‘And if one man from the group returns the greeting, does that suffice on their behalf?’ He said, ‘Yes.’”
However, the chain of transmission is weak, for I do not know the narrators below Zayd ibn Aslam. Mālik narrated it from him as a mursal report, as mentioned previously under no. 1148. The hadith also has a good corroborating report from ‘Alī, may Allah be pleased with him, attributed to the Prophet with similar wording. It is documented in Al-Irwā’ (770), and is therefore authentic on its strength. Al-Muḥāmilī also recorded it in Al-Amālī (5/62/2).
1413 — “When the call to prayer is made, the gates of heaven are opened and supplication is answered.”
Al-Ṭayālisī recorded it in his Musnad (no. 2106): al-Rabī‘ narrated to us, from Yazīd, from Anas, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said this. Abū Ya‘lā also recorded it in his Musnad (1015–1016) through another route from al-Raqāshī, with the same wording. Yazīd al-Raqāshī is weak, while the rest of Abū Ya‘lā’s narrators are trustworthy narrators of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Al-Haythamī deemed it defective because of al-Raqāshī in Al-Majma‘ (1/334), but overlooked the fact that Abū Ya‘lā also transmitted it through another route better than this one. He said (1008): Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Sājī narrated to us; Suhayl ibn Ziyād informed us, from al-Taymī, from Anas, attributing it to the Prophet with the same wording. Ḥafṣ ibn ‘Amr al-Rubālī corroborated him, saying: Sahl ibn Ziyād narrated to us likewise. Al-Khaṭīb recorded it in Al-Tārīkh (8/204), as did al-Ḍiyā’ in Al-Mukhtārah (127/2). Al-Thaqafī also recorded it in Al-Thaqafiyyāt (4/27/2).
I say: This is a good chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy, though Sahl ibn Ziyād has slight weakness. Al-Dhahabī said in Al-Mīzān: “They did not declare him weak, and he has a biographical entry in Tārīkh al-Islām.”
