lawful. The photographer is a non-maḥram man to them—and may even be a disbeliever. They then present their photographs to some young men, claiming that those men wish to propose marriage to them. The matter then ends without a marriage proposal, while their daughters’ photographs remain with the young men, so that they may wax amorous over them and cool their youthful ardor by looking at them!
How wretched, then, are fathers who have no protective jealousy! To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.
100—“O Abū Dharr, shall I not teach you words by which you can catch up with those who preceded you, and which no one who comes after you will overtake you with, except one who does the same deeds as you? Say Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times after every prayer, al-ḥamdulillāh (all praise is due to Allah) thirty-three times, and subḥānallāh (glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, concluding with: lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lah al-mulk wa-lah al-ḥamd wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr (there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs sovereignty and all praise, and He has power over all things).”
Reported by Abū Dāwūd (1504): ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us; Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah narrated to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿĀʾishah narrated to me, saying: Abū Hurayrah narrated to me, saying:
“Abū Dharr said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy have gone ahead with the rewards. They pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and have surplus wealth from which they give charity, whereas we have no wealth to give in charity.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then mentioned the above, adding at the end: ‘His sins will be forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.’”
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic; all its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections. However, I have reservations about the authenticity of this addition in the hadith through this chain. Aḥmad recorded it (2/238) through the same chain, saying: “Al-Walīd narrated it to us,” without this addition. Al-Dārimī likewise recorded it through another route, stating (1/312):
