with a napkin until he licks his hand, for a person does not know in which part of his food Allah has placed the blessing. Satan lies in wait for people—or for a person—in every matter, even at his eating or over his food. Nor should he lift the dish until he licks it or has it licked, for there is blessing in the last part of the food.”
Ibn Hibban (1343) and al-Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman (2/187/2), related it through two routes from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr informed me from Jabir—and al-Bayhaqi said that he heard Jabir ibn Abdullah narrate—that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say it.
Ibn Lahi'ah corroborated him: Abu al-Zubayr narrated to us from Jabir, likewise. Ahmad related it (3/394).
The hadith is also in Sahih Muslim (6/114), through Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, with the same wording, except for the words: “Satan lies in wait ...” This is why I deliberately cited it through Ibn Hibban and al-Bayhaqi: in the latter’s narration, Abu al-Zubayr explicitly states that he heard it directly, so the chain is uninterrupted and the concern over ambiguous transmission in Muslim’s narration is removed. Furthermore, its strength is reinforced by the fact that he transmitted the hadith through al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, with similar wording.
“Lies in wait” means: watches attentively. Al-Misbah states: “Rasad means the road; its plural is arsad, as sabab (cause) has the plural asbab. I lay in wait for him, rasadan, according to the verbal pattern of qatala: I sat for him on the road. The agent noun is rasid, and it may be pluralized as rasad, just as khadim (servant) is pluralized as khadam. Rasidi is an adjectival form derived from rasad; it denotes one who sits on the road waiting for people, in order to wrongfully and aggressively take some of their property.”
I say: It is truly regrettable to see many Muslims today—especially those influenced by Western customs and European traditions—whom Satan has succeeded in depriving of a portion of their wealth, not by aggression but entirely through their own choice. This is only because of their ignorance of the sunnah, or
