“It is a good, authentic hadith.”
1401 — “Whoever has land or date palms should not sell them until he has first offered them to his partner.”
Al-Nasa’i (2/234), Ibn al-Jarud in al-Muntaqa (299), and Ahmad (3/307) narrated it through Sufyan, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
I say: This is an authentic chain according to Muslim’s criteria, were it not for the fact that Ibn al-Zubayr practised tadlis and narrated it with an ambiguous “from” formula. However, Muslim and others also narrated it by way of Ibn Jurayj: Abu al-Zubayr informed him that he heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say it, with similar but more complete wording. It is cited in al-Irwa’ (1532).
1402 — “When three people are together, two of them should not converse privately to the exclusion of the third.”
Ahmad (2/351) narrated it with this wording through Ibn Lahiʿah, who said: Abu Yunus narrated to us from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
I say: This is a chain acceptable as corroborative evidence. Its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ibn Lahiʿah had poor retention. Thus, when he narrates something that agrees with the trustworthy narrators, this indicates that he retained it correctly. This hadith has also come through routes from a number of other Companions, including Abdullah ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Masʿud.
- As for the hadith of Ibn Umar, it has several routes from him:
The first: from Nafiʿ, from him, with similar wording. Malik (3/151–152) narrated it, as did al-Bukhari from Malik (11/68), likewise in al-Adab al-Mufrad (1168), Muslim (7/12), and Ahmad (2/17, 32, 121, 123, 126, 141, and 146) through various routes from him. Ahmad added, in the narration of Ayyub from him:
