Ahmad (3/15 and 59) and Abu al-Shaykh in Tabaqat al-Asbahaniyyin (96/2) also recorded it. This indicates that the report is from Abu Sa'id, not Jabir. Although Ibn Lahi'ah and Abu al-Zubayr are both weak, their weakness does no harm when they are used as corroborating reports.
1393 — “When you rise to pray, do not precede your prayer leader in bowing or prostration; rather, let him precede you.”
Al-Bazzar recorded it in his Musnad (56), from Yusuf ibn Khalid, who said: Ja'far ibn Sa'd ibn Samurah narrated to me; Habib ibn Sulayman narrated to me from his father, Sulayman, from Samurah ibn Jundub, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said it. He also recorded it through the route of Isma'il ibn Muslim, from al-Hasan, from Samurah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Do not precede your imam in bowing, for you will catch up with him in whatever he has preceded you.”
Al-Haythami said in his Zawa'id: “There is evident weakness in both chains of transmission.”
I say: This is because the first chain contains Yusuf ibn Khalid al-Samti. Al-Hafiz said: “They abandoned him, and Ibn Ma'in declared him a liar.” Moreover, those above him in the chain are unknown. In the other chain, Isma'il ibn Muslim al-Makki is weak. Al-Hasan al-Basri practised tadlis and related it using an ambiguous transmission formula. However, the meaning of the hadith is authentic; it is found in a number of hadiths from Mu'awiyah and others. See Sahih Abi Dawud (no. 630).
1394 — “When one of you hears the call to prayer while a vessel is in his hand, let him not put it down until he has fulfilled his need from it.”
It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/549—Halabi edition) and Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his Exegesis
