ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. He cited it in the biography of this al-Ḥasan, who was known as Ibn Būbah, but did not mention any criticism or favorable assessment of him. The rest of its narrators are trustworthy.
The hadith also has a supporting report from Abū Umāmah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
“Three matters—if I were to swear by them, I would be true to my oath; and as for the fourth, if I were to swear by it, I would hope not to incur sin: Allah does not place one who has a share in Islam on the same level as one who has no share in it. Allah does not take a servant into His protection and then entrust him to another in the Hereafter. No servant loves a people except that Allah will raise him among them or with them. The fourth is that Allah does not conceal a servant’s faults in this world except that He will conceal them for him at the Standing.”
Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī recorded it in al-Rubāʿiyyāt (1/106/2), as did Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣāʿidī in al-Sudāsiyyāt (4/2), from Ṭālūt ibn ʿAbbād: Faḍāl ibn Jubayr narrated to us: Abū Umāmah narrated to us, attributed to the Prophet. Faḍāl ibn Jubayr is weak in hadith, as Abū Ḥātim stated.
1388 — “Two brief rakʿahs which you regard as insignificant and perform voluntarily, which this man”—gesturing toward a grave—“adds to his deeds, are dearer to him than the remainder of your worldly life.”
Ibn Ṣāʿid recorded it in the additions to al-Zuhd (159/1), from al-Kawākib, 575, and no. 31—the Indian edition: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd Abū Hishām al-Rifāʿī narrated to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated to us, from Abū Mālik—who was Saʿd ibn Ṭāriq al-Ashjaʿī—from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Prophet passed by a grave that had been newly filled in and said the hadith. Ibn Ṣāʿid said: “It is a singular, good hadith.”
I say: All of its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, except for this al-Rifāʿī, concerning whom some scholars have spoken critically. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “He is not strong ... Al-Bukhārī said: I saw them unanimous in declaring him weak.”
I say: However, he was not alone in narrating it. Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in Akhbār Iṣfahān (2/225), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ (no. 907), through two other chains from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, with the same wording.
