of whom Ibn Ḥibbān said: “He narrates inverted reports from trustworthy narrators; he cannot be cited as evidence.” He also said: “His hadiths do not resemble those of trustworthy narrators.” Ibn ʿAdī and al-Dāraquṭnī recorded it through his route in al-Gharāʾib, and said: “ʿUbayd Allah ibn Saʿīd alone narrated it from his father, from Mālik,” as stated in al-Lisān.
I then found some corroborating reports for the hadith. Ibn Mājah recorded it (2/565) from Nāfiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Farwah ibn Qays, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, with the same wording.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, due to the unknown status of Farwah ibn Qays, as well as that of the narrator from him. The report is invalid, as al-Dhahabī stated in Ṭabaqāt al-Tahdhīb; al-Būṣīrī transmitted this from him in al-Zawāʾid (287/2) and concurred. Thus, al-Mundhirī’s statement in al-Targhīb (4/129), “with a good chain of transmission,” is itself not good. He, al-Būṣīrī, and al-Haythamī in al-Majmaʿ (10/309) then mentioned that al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Ṣaghīr with a good chain of transmission.
I say: In it, at no. 209, there is the narration of al-Muʿallā al-Kindī from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar, with the first sentence abridged; and he added at its end: “They have secured the honor of this world and the dignity of the Hereafter.” Its narrators are trustworthy except for this al-Muʿallā. Al-Bukhārī cited him in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (4/1/394), as did Ibn Abī Ḥātim (4/1/330), through al-Aʿmash’s narration from him; neither of them mentioned any criticism or commendation of him. Mālik ibn Mighwal also narrated this hadith from him, and Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the trustworthy narrators. Thus, taken together, these chains render the hadith good; as for its first sentence, it is authentic.
1385 — “If land has been divided and its boundaries demarcated, then there is no right of pre-emption in it.”
Abū Dāwūd (2/256—al-Ḥalabī) and al-Bayhaqī (6/104) recorded it from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, or from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, or from both of them, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said this.
