- Ibn Abī ʿUmar and Sufyān, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, narrated:
“ʿUmar asked ʿAlī for the hand of his daughter Umm Kulthūm. He mentioned to him that she was still young. (It was said to him: ‘If he turns you down, ask him again.’) ʿAlī said to him: ‘I shall send her to you. If you are pleased with her, then she is your wife.’ So he sent her to him, and ʿUmar uncovered her lower legs. She said: ‘Were you not the Commander of the Believers, I would have struck you in the eye.’ This poses a difficulty for those who say that he may look at nothing besides the face and hands.”
This view, whose difficulty al-Ḥāfiẓ indicated, is the position of the Ḥanafīs and Shāfiʿīs.
Ibn al-Qayyim said in Tahdhīb al-Sunan (3/25–26):
“Dāwūd said: He may look at the rest of her body. Three reports are narrated from Aḥmad:
The first is that he may look at her face and hands.
The second is that he may look at what normally appears, such as the neck, lower legs, and the like.”
