“ʿAlī sent for Muḥammad ibn Maslamah, and he was brought before him. He asked, ‘What has held you back from this affair?’ He replied, ‘Your cousin—meaning the Prophet—gave me a sword and said: “Fight with it so long as the enemy is being fought. But when you see people killing one another, take it to a rock and strike it against it, then remain in your house until an inevitable death comes to you or you are struck down by a wrongful hand.”’ He said, ‘Leave him alone.’”
Aḥmad recorded it (5/225). Its narrators are trustworthy, but its chain is interrupted between al-Ḥasan—namely, al-Baṣrī—and ʿAlī.
He then recorded it (5/226) through the route of Ziyād ibn Muslim Abū ʿUmar, who said: Abū al-Ashʿath al-Ṣanʿānī narrated to us: “Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah sent us to Ibn al-Zubayr. When I arrived in Medina, I entered upon so-and-so”—Ziyād mentioned his name—“and he said, ‘The people have done what they have done; what do you think?’ He replied, ‘My close friend Abū al-Qāsim charged me: “If you encounter any of these tribulations, go to Mount Uḥud and break the edge of your sword against it …”’” The hadith is similar in meaning. Its chain is good.
He then recorded it (3/493), as did Ibn Mājah (3962), through the route of ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, from Abū Burdah, who said: “I entered upon Muḥammad ibn Maslamah,” and he mentioned it as a hadith attributed to the Prophet: “There will indeed be tribulation, division, and discord. When that occurs, take your sword to Mount Uḥud and strike it …” The hadith is like al-Ḥasan’s narration. Thus, the hadith is authentic when all its chains are considered together.
Zahdam ibn al-Ḥārith al-Ghifārī and others also narrated it: Ahbān ibn Ṣayfī said, attributing a similar report to the Prophet. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (nos. 863–868).
1381 — “On the Day of Resurrection, an angel will be sent to every believer, accompanied by a disbeliever. The angel will say to the believer: ‘O believer, take this disbeliever; he is your ransom from the Fire.’”
Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (18/143/2) from Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Wuḥāẓī: Saʿīd ibn Yazīd ibn Dhī ʿAḍwān informed us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Abū Burdah, from his father, from the Prophet, with this wording. He said: “Ibn Shāhīn said: ‘Yazīd ibn Saʿīd alone narrated this hadith from ʿAbd al-Malik, and it is…”
