In al-Jāmiʿ, the hadith is attributed to al-Khaṭīb alone! Yet its original source is in al-Bukhārī (4/199) and Muslim (2/92), through Mansūr, from Abū Wāʾil, with wording similar to the narration of al-Ashʿath ibn Sulaym from his father, from him, except that it mentions two elderly women entering upon Aishah. It includes: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘They spoke the truth. Indeed, they are punished with a punishment that all beasts can hear.’”
It also has a supporting report, recorded by al-Ṭabarānī (3/78/2): Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Yaʿlā ibn al-Minhāl al-Sakūnī informed us: Isḥāq ibn Manṣūr informed us: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh informed us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh, in a hadith attributed to the Prophet: “The dead are indeed punished in their graves, to the extent that beasts hear their voices.”
This chain is acceptable for corroboration. All of its narrators are known, except al-Sakūnī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim included his biography through another narrator who narrated from him, but mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation concerning him. I then found it in Akhbār Iṣbahān (1/198), through Muḥammad ibn Shirāz: Yaʿlā ibn al-Minhāl al-Sakūnī narrated to us with the same chain. Al-Mundhirī said (4/182): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr with a good chain of transmission.”
1378 — “Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is Generous and loves generosity and noble character, and He hates their base qualities.”
It was recorded by Abū al-Shaykh in his Aḥādīth (12/1), al-Ḥākim (1/48), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (3/255 and 8/133), and al-Silafī in Muʿjam al-Safar (18/1), through Muḥammad ibn Thawr al-Ṣanʿānī, from Maʿmar, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” And it is as he said, for he was corroborated by Ḥajjāj ibn Sulaymān ibn al-Qumarī: Abū Ghassān narrated to us from Abū Ḥāzim with it. Al-Ḥākim recorded it and likewise declared it authentic, saying:
