It was recorded by Muslim (8/37), al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (113), al-Tirmidhi (3/93), al-Darimi (2/108), Ibn Majah (2/324), Ibn al-Mubarak in al-Zuhd (606), and Ahmad (5/149, 156, 161, 171). Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith.”
Al-Haythami cited the hadith in al-Majmaʿ (5/19), from Ahmad’s narration with the wording given in the heading, and from al-Bazzar’s narration with the wording: “When you cook a pot of food, increase its water or its broth, and look after your neighbours.” He said: “Among al-Bazzar’s narrators is Abd al-Rahman ibn Mughra, whom Abu Zurʿah and a number of others declared trustworthy. There are remarks concerning him, but they are not detrimental; the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Sahih.”
He then cited it elsewhere in the same work (8/165), with the wording: “When one of you cooks a pot of food, let him increase its broth, then give some of it to his neighbour.” He said: “Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat, and its chain includes Ubayd Allah ibn Saʿid, al-Aʿmash’s guide. Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy, while others deemed him weak; the rest of its narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: Tammam also recorded it in al-Fawaʾid (10/186/2), through Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Mughra al-Azdi, from al-Aʿmash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, with this wording.
I say: This is a valuable point of benefit, for Ibn al-Mughra identified the intermediary between al-Aʿmash and Jabir as Abu Sufyan, whose name was Talhah ibn Nafiʿ. He was truthful and was among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, though al-Hafiz said of Ibn al-Mughra: “There has been criticism of his narration from al-Aʿmash.” In sum, the hadith, through its chains from Jabir, and the corroborating report from Abu Dharr that I mentioned, are undoubtedly authentic. And Allah knows best.
1369 — “When one of you prays, let him wear his two garments, for Allah is more deserving that one adorn oneself for Him.”
Al-Tahawi recorded it in Sharh Maʿani al-Athar (1/221), and al-Tabarani in
