“Authentic.” Al-Dhahabi endorsed this in al-Talkhis. Yet in Kitab al-Zuhd, he related it from the Torah with this wording, then said: “It has also been narrated as a hadith attributed to the Prophet, but it is not authentic.” End quote. In al-Tirmidhi’s version, it contains Abu Khalid al-Walibi narrating from his father; but his father is unknown, as stated in al-Manar, and Za’idah ibn Nushayt is unknown as well.
I say: His statement, “from his father,” is an obvious error, for this father is mentioned neither in al-Tirmidhi’s chain nor elsewhere. Perhaps his eye fell upon the words “from his father” following “ibn Nushayt,” then moved on to what follows “from Abu Khalid al-Walibi,” and he inadvertently overlooked it. I then found the hadith in the section of exegesis in al-Hakim’s al-Mustadrak (2/443), where it is authenticated, as al-Manawi mentioned. He narrated it through ‘Imran ibn Za’idah, with this chain.
I also found a strong supporting report for the hadith from Ma‘qil ibn Yasar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Your Lord, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘O son of Adam, devote yourself to My worship, and I shall fill your heart with contentment and fill your hands with provision. O son of Adam, do not keep away from Me, lest I fill your heart with poverty and fill your hands with preoccupation.’”
Al-Hakim recorded it (4/326) through Salam ibn Abi Muti‘: Mu‘awiyah ibn Qurrah narrated to us from him. He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and they are correct. Salam al-Tawil also narrated it from Zayd, from Mu‘awiyah ibn Qurrah, with the same wording. Ibn ‘Adi recorded it (163/1) in the biographical entry of this Salam, who is abandoned. Zayd al-‘Ami is weak.
1360 — “If they drink wine, flog them. Then, if they drink, flog them. Then, if they drink, flog them. Then, if they drink a fourth time, kill them.”
Abu Dawud (2/473—al-Halabi edition), Ibn Majah (2/121), Ibn Hibban (1519), al-Hakim (4/372), and Ahmad (4/95, 96, and 101) recorded it from ‘Asim ibn Bahdalah, from
