It also has a second route. Ahmad narrated it (5/63–64): Affan related to us; Hammad ibn Salamah related to us; Yunus related to us; Ubaydah al-Hujaymi related to us, from Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi, who said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,” and he mentioned it in similar terms, adding at its end: “Do not revile anyone.” Thereafter, I never reviled anyone—not a sheep nor a camel.
Its narrators are trustworthy narrators of the Sahih, apart from Ubaydah al-Hujaymi, who is unknown. It is also disconnected, for Abu Tamimah was a Successor, not a Companion; rather, he narrated it from Abu Jurayy Jabir ibn Sulaym, or Sulaym ibn Jabir. Hushaym likewise narrated it from Yunus ibn Ubayd with the wording: “Fear Allah, and do not regard as insignificant ...” The discussion of it has preceded under no. 770. It also has another connected route from Abu Tamimah with the wording: “Do not revile anyone,” which will come shortly.
1353 — “If you have given your family their fill of milk in the evening, then avoid any carrion that Allah has forbidden.”
Al-Hakim narrated it (4/125), as did al-Bayhaqi (9/357), from Yahya ibn Yahya, who said: Kharijah informed us, from Thawr, from Rashid ibn Sa‘d—from Samurah ibn Jundub; al-Bayhaqi added: “And he gave me a written document”—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
I say: It is as they said, except that I fear there may be a break between Rashid ibn Sa‘d and Samurah, for there were approximately fifty years between their deaths. Abu Hatim and others mentioned that he did not hear from Thawban. And Allah knows best.
Regarding “an evening draught,” al-Nihayah states: “Ghubuq is drinking at the end of the day, as opposed to sabuh, drinking in the morning.”
